Greene County Learning Center

The Greene County Learning Center appears to be one of six in southern Indiana that is safe from closure at this point. According to information in the Greene County Daily World, the center located at White River Valley High School in Switz City will remain open past the end of the year. It appears that centers in Martin and Washington counties would not have the same benefit as both are slated for closure effective at the end of the year. The Greene County Center opened in 1998 and has served over 3,000 students at the location. College levels classes are available through Vincennes University, Indiana State, Ivy Tech, IU, Ball State, Purdue and Indiana Wesleyan. Classes are offered on site by instructors and through distance learning including interactive video and the Internet. Officials say funding cuts from the state through the Commission on Higher Education is the reason for the possible site closures.

Habitat For Humanity

The Daviess County Habitat for Humanity is now accepting applications for its 2010 building project. The Habitat board has sites available in Washington, Plainville and Elnora for upcoming projects. The Daviess County Habitat board also received an update on the work at the 15th and Van Trees site in Washington. The project remains on schedule as the exterior work is nearly completed and builders are preparing to begin the interior portion. Construction at that site continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm.

Daviess County residents have until the middle of November to make comments regarding a modification of an operating permit for a Washington business. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has received an application from Grain Processing Corporation for the modification to their existing permit that was issued in October 2007. GPC has applied to revise a compliance determination requirement for a control device. That unit prevents SO2 emissions by removing a chemical compound produced by its anaerobic wastewater treatment process. The modification would correct, remove or change conditions from previously approved permits. IDEM has reviewed the application and has developed preliminary findings that would allow for the changes. A copy of the permit application and the preliminary findings are available for inspection at the Washington Carnegie Public Library and at the IDEM regional office in Petersburg.

Scam

The Indiana State Police is warning residents about a scam that has occurred thus far in 11 states and has now been found in Indiana. State police say a telephone caller will claim to be a jury coordinator for the area and will advise the victim that they have failed to show up for jury duty. Usually the victim will protest that they had not received a notice about being selected, the caller will then ask for social security and date of birth. They say they need that information in order to cancel the arrest warrant that had been issued for failure to appear. The information is then used to steal the victim's identity. Police reminds listeners to never give out personal information over the phone.
